Bespoke Wedding Matchboxes: The Small Detail Guests Actually Notice
Some of the best details on a wedding day are the ones nobody had to be told to look at twice. A bespoke matchbox is exactly that. It sits quietly on a bar cart or a table, matches your stationery suite without anyone needing to explain why, and ends up in someone’s pocket as a genuine little keepsake of the day. I wanted to talk through why this has become one of our most requested finishing touches, and where it actually works best.
What it is, properly
We print your matchboxes to match your existing stationery suite, in your colours and design, on a standard matchbox holding around twenty matches. You can choose red or white tipped matches, and every box is printed double sided, so the detail carries through no matter which way the box is sitting. They’re designed and produced in house here in Auckland, alongside the rest of your suite, which means the finish and colour match what’s already on your tables rather than being a separate, disconnected add-on.
Minimum order is fifty boxes, which tends to suit most guest counts comfortably, whether you’re using them as a bar detail, a table detail, or sending guests home with one each as a favour.
Where they actually earn their place
On the bar. This is where we see them used most. A small tray or bowl of matched matchboxes beside the bar is an easy, low-effort styling win, and it’s genuinely useful if you’ve got candles, sparklers for a send-off, or an outdoor evening reception where guests want to light something themselves.
As a favour. A matchbox is a favour people actually keep, rather than one that gets left on the table at the end of the night. It’s small enough not to feel like an obligation, but personal enough, printed in your own design, to feel considered rather than generic.
As a table detail. One or two per table, sitting near your table numbers or centrepiece, is a simple way to carry your design further across the reception without adding another large-format piece to the room.
Why the double-sided print matters
A single-sided printed box only looks finished from one angle, and on a table or bar cart, boxes get picked up, turned over, and set back down constantly throughout the night. Printing both sides means your design holds up no matter how the box lands, which is a small thing, but it’s the kind of small thing that keeps a detail looking intentional rather than like an afterthought.
A few honest answers to the questions I get asked most
Can the matchboxes match a semi-custom collection or a bespoke design? Yes. Whichever design foundation the rest of your suite is built on, your matchboxes are printed to match it, so they sit naturally alongside your invitations and signage rather than as a separate item.
Is fifty boxes too many for a smaller wedding? Fifty is our minimum order, and most couples find a use for the full quantity between the bar, the tables, and send-home favours, even at a smaller wedding. If you’re unsure how to use fifty across your day, get in touch and we can talk through it.
Do you offer any other match tip colour besides red or white? Red or white tip are the two options we offer. Both work well against most palettes, since the design itself is where your colours and personality come through.
Can I order matchboxes on their own, without a full stationery suite? Yes, they can be ordered as a standalone item. Many couples do pair them with an existing suite so the design carries across, but it isn’t a requirement.
